Sunday 18 March 2012: Orca surfacing off Akaroa Heads
Wonderful trip with the Nature Photography society out on a boat down Akaroa Harbour and out into the Pacific Ocean.
It was a fabulous day, the weather was calm the sun warm and the company great. We saw many things, great rock formations, birds, dolphin, but for me the highlight was seeing a pod of orca heading north.
They are not often seen, as they don't stay in one area like the Hector's dolphin do, but travel long distances. This pod was a large male, several females and at least one young one.
This one is the male with a high fin, there is a baby with him, which was harder to get a photo of, I've put some other shots here
