Monday 19 March 2012: kangaroo paws

The Red and Green Kangaroo Paw is the Floral Emblem of Western Australia and the plant is endemic to the south west of the state.

This little beauty is thriving in a large clump in my folks garden and the birds just love them. The 'claw' like curl at the end of each flower deposits pollen on the head of foraging wattle birds and honey eaters and these clever flowers deposit their pollen on different parts of the birds' heads so pollen from one species is less likely to be deposited on the wrong species.

Clever hey??
