Tuesday 27 March 2012: Demoiselle cranes
Another beautiful day. There was thunder in the distance, but the weather was fine wherever we went.
We drove towards the Akrotiri Peninsula and visited the salt marshes there in the afternoon. As we did a spot of birding, 3 large birds flew over. As we followed them in our binoculars, we saw that they were cranes. When they landed it was possible to say that they were demoiselle cranes. They were parents and one young from last year, travelling with them to learn the route.
These birds have come from east Africa and head for Kazakhstan for the summer. They tolerated us being quite close to them in our coach. I had only a 100 mm lens - very frustrating - but I still wanted to blip them because they were so special to see.
There were lots more plants as usual.
Tomorrow is our last full day.
