Visions of Mughal India

Today I went to see the exhibition of Howard Hodgkin's collection of Mughal paintings at the Ashmolean Museum. I could have spent all day looking at this exquisite collection and it was difficult to decide what to blip. I loved the Rajasthani elephants and also the scenes from palace life but chose in the end to show you this unusual sketch which was both particularly charming and also a good illustration of the accomplishment of the artist. It's unusual in that drawings that were done in preparation for the paintings have tended not to survive.
