Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

A long time dead

A couple of days ago I blipped an ancient bronze/iron age saddle quern that I had found on the Sands of Forvie. Back in 1951, the archaeologist Dr W Kirk was working in the same area and came across a settlement of 19 circular huts, dating from the late Bronze Age/ early Iron Age. Outside the huts were traces of working places, with saddle and flat rotary querns and occasional middens containing shells and animal bones.

The people from the settlement cremated their dead on site, placing their remains in small ring cairns, of which this is one.
