....211 Years Ago Today
On this day 211 years ago Nelson was 'ere. Pretty much where I'm pointing is the site of one of the three battles credited to Nelson on his column (I believe it mentions "The Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar"....and possibly some others). It was a hard fought battle that cost Nelson more than most of his other battles. But he was attacking the Danish navy, in it's harbour, with a coward for an Admaral who refused to join in. It was a punishing and close battle by all accounts. The Danes will tell you that they only lost old merchant ships and decommissioned warships (and a lot of men), which could well explain why the British had to come back three years later to bomb the hell out of the Danish fleet and a fair proportion of the city (with no formal declaration, killing thousands). This second attack becoming, what the Danes consider, (one of) the first recorded terrorist attack on civilians.
I had a bit of a Danish/British conflab today otherwise known as Road Rage
