Friday 6 April 2012: Moving in
The meerkats are back at Edinburgh Zoo. The group, dubbed the clan McMeerkat by zoo staff, have settled in to their new home and are already entertaining visitors to the zoo. With a family group of eight male and three females there is always something going on. Within a Meerkat group, appropriately known as a clan, there is always one animal on watch while the others look for food or dig out a burrow. They take turns at acting as sentry for the clan, and will warn the rest of any potential danger, sending them all scurrying for cover.
