Saturday 7 April 2012: A sore back

...and this is what I have to show for it.

This morning, I started out weeding the flower beds around the trees in my front yard. The idea was to go as natural as possible. Pluck out the dandelions and the big, nasty clover, leave the clover with the cute little yellow flowers, and work with nature.

A few minutes into it I decided, "This has to go."

I got out the weed whacker and got rid of all the non-civilized plants. Then I got out the rototiller and turned it all over. Then I went to Lowes and dropped about $200 on Verbina, Lantana, Phlox, Dianthus and Salvia (Sage), Peat Moss and Mulch. Then I planted them all. I started with the bed under this tree, and this is the finished product.

I finished under the other tree, but it was after dark by then. This tree took about a half a bag of mulch; the other tree required the rest of that bag, plus three more, to give you an idea of what was involved.

I try to put perennials around the trees. The raised flower beds by the house (which I also weed whacked and rototilled this morning) will get annuals added to the bulbs when I get a chance.
