Sunday 8 April 2012: Flat calm temptation
A little over year ago, during her Christmas holidays, Christina obtained her Powerboat Level II driver's licence at the Royal Sporting Club in Bahrain. The weather at the time was fairly windy and the sea quite choppy - I think she found her final test rather nerve-wracking. Today we had cause to be back at the Royal Sporting Club marina in flat calm conditions and she couldn't resist nipping down onto the floating dock to check out the RIB in which she had done her course.
"The keys are in it!" she called out to me, "We could just jump in and take her for a spin - I'd get her up on the plane in three seconds in this!"
In fact, we were there to pick up Immy from her RYA Level III dinghy sailing course, which she is doing with her friends Alexandra and Harry. This has temporarily replaced the riding lessons that she has been having in Nelson; her father does not want her riding in Bahrain and she doesn't want to sail in NZ at the moment because she thinks it'll be too cold! She had hoped that they would have the same instructor who taught them the first two levels, but it seems she and her husband have gone back to live in the UK. Christina's power-boat instructor, on the other hand, is apparently now working in the Greek islands. I know which I'd prefer!
A fairly quiet Easter Sunday, so far. Immy sailed in the morning; Christina had a lie-in and then sunbathed in the half-hearted sun (even Bahrain has been having strange and fairly awful weather this year) and I read my book. After collecting Immy we stopped on the way home to pick up one of our favourite lunches - hummus, tabbouleh, kibbeh and mutabal from Al Abraaj - and then the 'Easter Bunny' (me!) produced Cadbury's delights for everyone. Immy has now gone over to Kate's house and Christina to her friend Kaci's with Craig and various other musicians for a 'bongo jam' session. Christina has borrowed Immy's Sri Lankan bongo, a recent present from Sujatha, for the occasion.
Later, we have a reservation for dinner at Trader Vic's for an Easter Sunday dinner and plan to join our friends outside on the deck for coffee afterwards. For once, I'm doing this blip early as I find the jet-lag getting to me in the evenings and so far each of my Bahrain blips has been posted the following morning....
Happy Easter, everyone!
