Frogs, Rain and Kids!

So after work today I put on my jeans, rubber boots (wellies), rain jacket and a hat and headed to yet another section of the Columbia Slough to volunteer for a frog hunt. More specifically, we were looking for frog egg sacks, but it has rained hard the last 24 hours and the water levels have gone up to the point they are probably under water. We did not find any egg sacks, but we saw birds and bugs and filled our boots with pond water.

This is a salamander egg sack being held by our naturalist and being touch by a curious little girl. in the white tub are bullfrog tadpoles. We all got to take turns holding them, even the adults!

We also saw newts, salamanders, western painted turtles that hatched yesterday and a tree frog.

It rained but this is Oregon and that is what happens when you go on a frog hunt in April. I believe a good time was had by all, with the possible exception of a mom or two who was not expecting to go wading in a foot or two of water.

Seriously it was so cool!

Happy blipping!

PS - we flushed a snipe who was hiding in the cattails!
