Thursday 12 April 2012: SPOONBILLS IN FLIGHT
mainly Cloudy day here today with a 4.6 EQ just to add a bit of flavour to a more recently quiet period.
There is a flock of around 80 Spoonies in Christchurch at the moment. Its the biggest number I've seen at one time. They break up into smaller groups after roosting through the high tide period - they dont feed during high tide as they are waders and like some dirt under their feet.
Its pretty spectacular to see them roosting in a flock of 80 - but they dont fly in those numbers - about 10 is the most I've seen in flight. Here's a few of them !
