Thursday 12 April 2012: Fresh fields

Over the years the field behind our house has nourished winter wheat, salad crops, a summer of herbs including coriander which smelt glorious at first, then as the temperature rose and people were picking it, quite sickly. The pickers were not supplied with water and used to come here to fill their bottles. As a thank you, at the end of picking, they presented us with a crate of baby spinach and yes, coriander. Last winter the crop was turnips which were harvested and the left-overs ploughed up for the cattle. Now the cattle are gone to the field beyond - I'll miss them coming to look in our kitchen window - and two tractors are ploughing, harrowing and seeding. Wait and see what this year's crop is. The birds don't care, they are after the seed already.
And then it rained ...
