Cadder Parish Church...very chilling!

An early bike ride took me and eldest along the canal to Cadder Church and beyond. We stopped off to explore the churchyard and bumped into a couple of the congregation who very kindly filled us in on a bit of the history of the place.

What you can see in the blip is the mort safe, an extremely heavy iron coffin that was put over a fresh grave to stop grave-robbers. The small building behind is the watch house, where relatives of the deceased and church office-bearers would mount a guard for several nights armed with a blunderbuss, in case any grave-robbers should be brave enough or stupid enough to come prowling. All very eerie and extremely fascinating for eldest whose eyes were as wide as saucers!
