WRITERS HAVEN

This was the home of SIR COMPTON MACKENZIE,31 DRUMMOND PLACE. He wrote the book, WHISKY GALORE. The book based on a true story of a ship running aground onto the island of ERISKAY[outer Hebrides,,Scotland] in the year 1941. On board was a hoard of 50,000 cases of whisky. The story was about people getting sent from ENGLAND to get the bottles back , to find the islanders had hidden them all over the island. The boat was called the S.S. POLITICIAN. The story was made into a film that was made on the island of BARRA in 1948. In the U.S.A. it was called TIGHT LITTLE ISLAND,as there was a ban on having drink titles. In FRANCE it was called WHISKY AGO,GO after the discotheque.
