Houses of Wilmington #17

Rankin-Orrell House (1897)

This house on 318 Orange Street is an outstanding example of the Queen Ann style, complete with its roof lines, porches, windows, balconies, shingled wall surfaces, and an octagonal tower.

More interesting is the original house that stood on this site, because it was the home of Anna McNeill Whistler, mother of the artist whose painting of her (Whistler's Mother), is one of his most famous. She was born and lived here until her family moved to New York at age 10.
