Horsing Around

My US home is located in the "Horse Capital of the World," Lexington, Kentucky. Beautiful horse farms surround the city limits with rolling bluegrass hills, serpentine fences, extravagant stables, and thoroughbred horses. The racing seasons and equestrian events dictate our community's collective calendar. But, if one were to ever doubt this claim that Lexington is the horse capital, then the skeptic only needs to travel the streets of the "Thoroughbred City" to see that nearly every corner, storefront, or park is adorned by the noble beast. We have sculptures of all kinds: metal-welded, enamel-painted, wood-carved and stone-chiseled. Even our police patrols downtown on 4-legged mounts. We walk our dogs throughout the downtown area and find ourselves passing these stylish steeds, so it only seemed appropriate to rein them in for a blip every once in a while.

He's of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger.... he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts. ~William Shakespeare, Henry V
