Monday 30 April 2012: sunflowers

In the Bickley Valley as well as vineyards, orchards, a new cider house and lovely walks there is a sunflower farm.
Under the autumn changing trees there is a paddock of sunny faces beaming up at the sky regardless of grey and blue, all with that fantastic heart of seeds.

Today I learned that sunflower seeds originate from a central point moving radially outwards as new seeds are formed. This is the 'optimal angular displacement' ensuring the maximum exposure for each seed to sun, rain and insects for pollination.
Isn't nature wonderful.
