White Lion

A classic brick street corner local - slightly unusual because Holt's pubs are usually more imposing and often finished with distinctive Accrington bricks.

The corner of the building is worth another look, there might almost have been a door there once.

The 25th in my Manchester Pubs series.

Should have done a bit more research earlier and I would have found out that it was -

First licensed in 1864, this is a fine example of a street corner local - in fact the White Lion is used as an example of this genre in the beer writer Michael Jackson's book "The English Pub". It is a three room pub with the tiny vault recently having been extended by enlarging into a smaller back room. The music room has a piano which is still used for sing-a-long nights
