Saturday 5 May 2012: You know you're in Scotland when...
One day, whilst in a cafe in the Royal Mile, I overheard a Japanese couple ask the waitress what Irn Bru was. The waitress replied that it was a drink often mixed with vodka.
Sometimes, I despair of our welcoming attitude to foreign visitors. How much would it have taken to go and get an little sample of 'our other national drink' and let the tourists taste it? Without the vodka. Especially as this particular establishment serves its drinks pre-poured by the glass full rather than by providing a can for their customers to open.
