Fortunately, this wall turned out to have a lip just below the level of the soil leading up to it. A pity that the whole thing slopes slightly, but this can be corrected. Less fortunate is the whole front-to-back slope thing the garden does, which required lots of standing about and beard-scratching this afternoon in order to try and reconcile the slope by means of various arrangements of bits of wood.
