Tuesday 15 May 2012: You can tell he's French

The French really know how to smoke. I've never smoked, or particularly liked the lingering smell cigarettes leave behind, but I can't deny I have always thought there was an undeniable glamour associated with smoking a gauloise.

My mother smoked them (because John Lennon smoked them!). I remember watching the rituals of lighting up, the hold, the delicate puff....I thought it was part of her femininity as much as Max Factor and red lipstick.

Since the smoking ban in bars/ most public workplaces came into effect, and an increasing pressure to stop smoking for health, you now just see huddles of people in the street, looking shifty, having a furtive puff. I wonder if they are able to enjoy anything about smoking now. Unless the French are visiting Glasgow (and you know they're French as they're the ones openly enjoying a smoke).
