All Fall Down

I have blipped Arnside Tower before but this is from a different angle. About one and a half miles from the village it is an example of a Cumbrian Pele Tower. It is unusual in that it is freestanding whereas most such towers were attached to farm buildings. It was built in the late 14th.or early 15th. Centuries and had a chequered history including a major fire in the 17th century.

In 1884 when it was already partly a ruin, it suffered a major storm and the South west face collapsed. The huge chunks in the picture are the result of this collapse and it is impressive that they have remained mortared in large pieces through all the weather which they face.
