Cross Section of the Roman Wall of London

This is the section near the Tower where a wonderful remaining section of the Roman Wall can be found near the Tower.

The Wall stands to 35 feet and Roman work survives to the level of the sentry walk at 14ft 6ins, with medieval stone work remaining above.

The Roman Wall was constructed with courses of rag-stones which sandwiched a rubble and mortar core. There were courses of flat red tiles used at intervals to give strength and stability. These can be seen in the photo.

It is estimated that the Roman Wall would have been 20 feet high. It was built between 190 and 225AD and ran for 3 miles in a great loop around the Roman City.

This is near the site of the Tower Hill scaffold where prisoners were beheaded until 1747.

I have been after this view for some time until snapped from the car yesterday evening.
