Agra Fort

The first Murgal King, Akbar rebuilt the fort in red sandstone when he took over India and made Agra his capital.

Shah Jahan (his grandson) destroyed some of the earlier buildings inside the fort to make his own, in white marble inlaid with gold and semi-precious gems, to match the beautiful Taj Mahal which he built to house the worldly remains of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
At the end of his life, Shah Jahan was deposed and restrained by his son, Aurangzeb, in the fort. It is rumoured that Shah Jahan died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony with this view of the Taj Mahal, pining for his wife.
