Southend on Sea cliff lift 1912

The lift replaced one of the first examples of a moving walkway which was installed in 1901. The lift is a counter balanced funicular railway, a funicular is a cable railway in which a cable moves a carriage up and down a steep slope (most well known one is at Lynton and Lynmouth) A malfunction with the counter weight meant the lift was out of action for 7 years. Major work was carried out and work on the stations was completed in 2006 and in 2010 the cliff lift itself was reopened with a new carriage, tracks, winding gear and electrical and control systems.
Weather today warm, sun and cloud.
