March Lion

If March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb.

Similarly the reverse is the case according to a weather saying.   Last night March certainly came in like a lion with howling gales whistling round the house and rattling the slates.  This morning there were broken plants, including this winter jasmine branch, scattered around the garden.  Will a mild calm March give way to April?

It is not really a reliable forecasting guide unlike many weather proverbs and may be the signs that winter is giving way to spring.  However one suggestion is that it is connected with the stars which meant so much to people in the past. At the beginning of March the constellation Leo the Lion is on the eastern horizon at sunset and at the end Aries the Ram is on the western horizon.  So perhaps this is the original meaning and at a time when many lambs are born.
