The Gallops

Knole Park was first enclosed in 1456 in order to contain the deer and indulge the fashion amongst the rich who would come here to hunt.    The deer shown here today could well be descendents of those hunted by Henry VIII.  Back in Tudor times the deer would be dislodged from the woodlands into the Gallops, and then chased by greyhounds into paddocks or nets, where the kill would take place.    The Gallops end in a huge bowl  shape in the land from where I was standing to take this photo looking back up the Gallops.
Mr P was putting out checkpoint flags for an orienteering event tomorrow.  I went along to help but my camera distracted me.
