Blue lights

Spotted this rather unusual looking Panda car. I looked hard for blue lights, but couldn't spot any. Not sure a Morris Minor would be able to catch many speeding drivers, though. I wish I could have photographed it in daylight, but it was already dark when I saw it.

Tonight the clocks go forward one hour in the UK, signalling the start of British summer time. We have William Willett to thank for this. He was a local builder in the area where we live, and it is said that he thought of the idea of Daylight Saving while riding his horse early one morning in local woods, and noticing how many blinds were still down when it was already light.

In 1907 he published a pamphlet, 'The Waste of Daylight'. It won some influential support: a young Winston Churchill promoted the idea. But it was 1916 before it was finally adopted. Sadly Willett did not live to see his plan enacted, as he died from influenza in 1915, aged just 58.

Willett's great-great grandson has also made his mark in life. He is Coldplay singer Chris Martin.
