Penicuik House

Went out in search of the lost garden of Penicuik today.  We didn't exactly find it, but we did manage to find Penicuik House again.  We were out here many years ago as part of a days open day.  It was before we had our car, so we were lucky that we had met two ladies at Glencourse Kirk who were going to Penicuik House and offered us a lift.  We have never been back since and weren't sure we would find it.

We had a great time today exploring the grounds next to Penicuik House which is only a shell after it was ruined in a fire.  The family that owned the estate turned the nearby stables into their home after the fire and their ancestors still live there.  The last time we were here there was scaffolding around the ruins as there was ongoing work to restore and maintain the ruins.

In the foreground of this picture is a water fountain.  Part of the ruins of Penicuick House can be seen in the middle ground and in the background is the stables that is now the family home.

Afterwards we went to the Flotterstone Inn for some soup.  While we were there I found a map giving directions to the lost garden of Penicuik which is on the Penicuik Estate but on the other side of the stables.  At least I have a better idea of where to look next time.
