Tuesday 29 May 2012: That Sweet Odour
The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem
For that sweet odour which doth in it live.
(Shakespeare, Sonnet 54)
I was surprised to find this lovely rosa rugosa in the middle of heathland among the heather and gorse on Waldridge Fell. Is it often found growing in the wild?
When I was a small child our entire garden was hedged with these roses, and they smelled divine! When I caught the scent on the wind this afternoon, it took me straight back to that garden - to hot days dancing in and out of the sprinkler, to mud pies and sandpit, to dry scratchy grass and butterflies.
