Ingleborough

A rather nice day to be heading to the train station at 8.30 am when everyone else was on their way to work.  The first train to Horton-in-Ribblesdale is a little late for starting the three peaks, but nicely time for a leisurely one.  It's a great station; seems to be maintained mostly by local volunteers, and the access to the west platform is from a public footpath only.  That was the way I headed out, swinging south to pass Gaping Gill before going up the hill.  I was glad I had put suncream on, it was a very bright day but with low cloud blowing over Ingleborough from the valley to the west, which disappeared once over the saddle in the blip (looking south from near to the top), but meant that the summit plateau was rather other-worldly.  That patch of snow was visible from the start, I was quite surprised that it was still there as it's in the sun for a good half of the day.

The trains only run every couple of hours and of course I returned about 5 minutes after one had left.  Quite a good thing really.  The Pen-y-ghent cafe is closed on Tuesdays, but happily the pub was open and has seats outside in the sun.
