Thursday 31 May 2012: Flower pickers
It was a quick blip on the way home today as I spotted the flower pickers who had arrived to gather in the Sweet Williams. A few years ago, a police car might arrive and suddenly the field would be empty with the pickers having disappeared rapidly in all directions over fences and hedges. Those were the days when gang masters were recruiting Social Security claimants from Sheffield and bussing them in. Now the crops are picked by the migrant workers. You still see the odd police car, but it is the illegal immigrants they are after now, not the Social Security moonlighters.
