On Our Way

It's ridiculously early this morning, but my obsessional nature dictates a blip posting before we leave, and with everything but the kitchen stove packed into the car, we are about to set off on the first leg of our journey to Orkney.
Today we hope to make Helmsdale, which leaves us a short journey to Scrabster tomorrow and the ferry at noon to Stromness.

To say that his Lordship is uneasy about being away from his beloved study behind the DOOR for four weeks is an understatement.
It has become apparent that he does not have the same affinity with Scottish island life as do I.

The likelihood of adverse weather conditions,* which hold no qualms for him on his weekly romp in the Biggar hills, has him questioning how he's going to fill his time, especially as there is no WiFi in our soon- to -be- home cottage.
My telling him that we can always walk to the harbour and watch the boat arriving twice a day doesn't appeal to his sense of humour, but he does appreciate the thought of spending time in the Pier Arts centre.

The thought of braving the elements with the sea ever near, and mixing with friendly island people, excites me as no amount of tramping in wind and rain soaked hills would. Four weeks is enough time to feel at home in a place.

Our next holiday will have to be his choice.

* it should be noted that the North Isles have had less rain and more blue skies than us during May. For the sake of matrimonial harmony, long may it continue.
