Killer Waves!

We're approaching the much feared area where the freak, monster or rogue waves are born. A sharp eye can see the red line on the screen, being the northern limit of this area. Which is absolutely no guarantee that they will not occur outside these limits. There are a couple of requirements needed to form these waves, at first a strong SSW running Agulhas Current along the East coast of South Africa, a lot of SW wind, running thus in the opposite direction of the current and preferably the presence of a cold front passing by. All this in the Southern winter. We are in the delicate position to comply with all these requirements, the only essential part we're missing yet is the strong Agulhas current.
We we're warned for the presence of these waves by our Ocean Weather Routing Service and that's why we will steer a WSWly heading first to the African coast and then follow the coastline.
Our apprentice Sjoerd doesn't seem to be too much impressed by the warning sign on the electronic sea chart screen. But he didn't experience any of the waves you can see when you click on this LINK
