Newton's Opticks. Leitz Summicron 50mm DR

A few weeks back (here) I noticed a beautiful leather-bound volume sitting in a barrister's bookcase at the library.  It is a first edition copy of Sir Isaac Newton's treatise on Optics from 1704.  Today, I had the opportunity to take it down and photograph the title page.  I tried to arrange the book so that the light from a window would strike across the parchment paper and reveal how the letters are deeply pressed into the surface.  Regrettably it doesn't show all that well.  Nor can the image reproduce the tactile sensation of the parchment or the patina of years.  It was a wonderful experience to gaze upon this treasure.
