Jubilee Beacon, Dunoon

At one minute past ten tonight hundreds of Jubilee Beacons were lit across Scotland , part of the 4000 or so in these islands and across the Commonwealth.

I was at the one in Dunoon, taking part in the lighting with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant and the local MP, with the whole thing organised and hosted by the Dunoon Community Council.

The beacon basket , which was first erected on the site for the commemoration of VE Day in 1995, is just below the Castle Hill in Dunoon, with a great view across the Clyde. It was a flawless dusk with people watching from the hill and it had only one downside - the incredibly plague of midges which surrounded us as the clock ticked down. They were as bad as I had seen(and felt) for quite a few years.

But as soon as the flames leapt up, the midges disappeared - as long as you didn't stray too far from the beacon.
