Penguin Droppings

Hexagons

I went into Gaddon Loch bird-hide this afternoon and was met with a loud buzzing. I left the doors open and opened the windows but the wasps wouldn't leave. The reason soon became clear - they were starting a bike in the leg-space of the wheelchair users' windows. Fortunately it was in the early stages and once the 3 adults were dispatched, I removed the outer layers of the nest and photographed it before destroying it too. Should be safe now but will check again next week.

The four central cells had large, well-developed wasp larvae. Those surrounding it had small. recently hatched larvae and the extreme outer cells had freshly-laid eggs. I think I caught it just in time.
