Community Gardens

A large city-owned empty lot in the neighborhood has long been divided into many plots that folks can rent for a low fee and do a little planting. I love seeing the different ways that people design their sunny allotments: never ending unique combinations of fences and trellises, raised beds and flat, symmetry or lack of, flowers mixed with vegetables or on their own, elaborate structures, simple mounds of dirt. With such abundance, it's interesting that we rarely see anyone there when we stroll over to see how things are going. There is corn there that is already at least seven feet tall, and zucchini that is ready to harvest!
