Houses of Wilmington #35

Miles Costin House - 1855

This Italianate style house on 20 South Fifth Street was built for Miles Costin (1800-1873).  He was a planter, commission merchant and town commissioner.  He built it with his wife Catherine.  Mrs. Robert Ransom's Female Seminary operated here in 1871.  It was acquired in 1885 by John Wilder Atkinson, insurance agent; and wife Elizabeth Strange Atkinson.  They added the second empire style mansard roof.
