Time

I drove into the garage this morning and just happened to notice, up on a high shelf near the ceiling, the only two remaining boxes from our move on November 17th 2012.  I have parked under these boxes every day since they were placed there and never wondered what was in them. When we moved, there must have been at least a hundred boxes (forty of them books) and we were intent on getting them unpacked and put away so that we could find things again and park in our garage. Was that only three years ago? It seems like half a lifetime. Was that really almost three years ago, it seems like only yesterday.

It's funny how time seems to be a rather elastic, even at times, illusory concept. Why does it seem to speed toward us, or away from us, at the speed of light on some occasions and drag with frustrating slowness at others? We are exhorted by the zen masters to "live in the moment", making every act a meditation. The concept is appealing and often seems most appropriate, so why is it so difficult?

I think it must have something to do with memory. For some reason, when it was the furthest thing from my mind, I happened to look up at those boxes and the sight of their humble cardboard exteriors brought back a flood of memories…

…the most immediate of which was to wonder what the heck is in those boxes. A post it note, in OilMan's handwriting, was only partially enlightening:
Pewter doo dahs
Glittery fruit
Scottish owl
Canton cups
I imagine they have enough memories attached that one or the other of us didn't want to get rid of them, but we have no other place to put them…or do we?

Below are some quotes regarding the question of time….

How did it get so late so soon? It's night before it's afternoon. December is here before it's June. My goodness how the time has flown. How did it get so late so soon?
Dr. Seuss

Yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream
-Kahlil Gibran

Time does not pass. It continues
-Marty Rubin

Time is a created thing. To say 'don't have time" is to say, 'I don't want to"
-Lao Tzu

Time is an illusion.
-Albert Einstein
