Friday 8 June 2012: TAT-1
I was at An Tobar in Tobermory tonight for the premiere of a new work by Aidan O'Rourke called TAT-1.
Supported by the New Music 20x12 project as part of the Cultural Olympiad, TAT-1 is inspired by the first transatlantic telephone cable that went from Clarenville, Newfoudland to Oban (or vica/versa). It went live in 1956 and for many years carried the "hot line", established after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The work was inspiring - bold, strong yet melodic. The audience loved it - and I can't wait to hear the recording they are working on this weekend or the Radio 3 & Radio Scotland repeat of what we heard live.
The young Tobermory singer Fiona McAdam performed in the first half of the concert , as she was releasing her new CD this evening. She is at the Tradional Music School at Plockton and has a great career ahead of her. One of her songs , which she sang on stage, can be heard here.
