If I Were a Dog

If I were a dog, anytime you were away
I would sit by the door,
or stand with my favorite ball,
or, maybe, hang out by your favorite apple tree with the cat.
I may even sit with your favorite pair of shoes,
and even if resting my eyes just for a moment,
all that I really do while you are away
is wait for you.
If I were a dog
that is all I would ever do.
