Monterey

A coach trip today to Monterey, 17 Mile Drive and Carmel. I had not realised how far we were going to go today. The day started at about 8:00 am and we got back to our hotel at about 8:30 pm. Monterey it turned out is about 100 miles from San Francisco, and Carmel another 20 miles or so further on.

The road we took south stayed close to the coast. We saw several people out surfing. We arrived at Monterey at lunch time. I had clam chowder in a cafe next to the aquarium, after we had made a quick visit to the aquarium itself. Monterey has a large cannery, now converted to more touristic activities. The sardine fishing was far too successful, leaving no fish to can.

The journey continued along the 17 Mile drive with expensive villas, and what seemed like a continuous golf course, but in reality was no doubt several different golf courses. We stopped again at Carmel. This is a very attractive small town, where Clint Eastwood was mayor some time ago. Here we had a coffee to prepare ourselves for the journey back to San Francisco.
