Friday 15 June 2012: Past Life
The weather here is awful. Biblical rain, thunder and lightning. Matthew's just back from a school trip to Eyam in the Peaks - there were a few soggy students getting off that coach...
So, an indoor blip. I found this old pendant, something I haven't worn in a few years. I used to wear it in a previous life, when I was a call-centre girl. Office clothes and court shoes...I can't imagine dressing like that now!
It was a horrible, horrible job. It was for a 'hire vehicle replacement' company (courtesy cars for people who have had an accident) and I hated every stressful, headset-wearing minute. I don't like talking on the phone at the best of times, so I wasn't great at it. It didn't help that the company didn't treat their (sometimes abusive) customers well, and provided a terrible service...I'd sympathise and agree with the nice clients and then remember "all calls are recorded for training purposes' - leading to the odd squirmy moment with a call being replayed to you in the boss' office.
Shudder. The only thing that made the job tolerable was my funny friend at the next desk, and our trips to the hot chocolate machine. So, next time you speak to someone at a call centre, try imagining a stressed jumper cuff chewer, with nervously shredded sleeves, and a headset on, at the other end of the line...
