Castle & Fountain

A day trip to Edinburgh to catch some street entertainment and soak up some Festival atmosphere.

Photo taken in Princes Street Gardens, looking up at Edinburgh Castle with the Ross Fountain in the foreground.

The Castle needs no introduction.

The gold coloured ironwork Ross Fountain was cast near Paris in the early 1860s and featured as an exhibit in the Great Exhibition in London in 1862.
It was bought for Edinburgh by a local gunsmith and philanthropist, James Ross, and transported in 122 pieces to Leith before being assembled and installed in it's current location in 1872.
It shows a standing naked woman on top, above 4 more naked nymphettes representing poetry, science, industry and the arts.
On the bottom tier is a collection of mermaids.
