The Edge of the Wold

Contrasts

Contrasts of light and shade, and of green and red - the opposite sides of the colour wheel.  This is the view from the prom at Ashmeadow back along the Arnside frontage, as we came back to the car from Gus's evening walk along the estuary. It's nearly high tide on a neap, enough water to reflect the houses behind the prom.  It's that rare quality of bright light just before sunset, contrasting sharply with the darkness of the overhead clouds.  The two little figures in red appeared just as I was about to take the shot.  There is a photo taken about 10 minutes later after the sun set here.

The alternative blip might have been of a mute swan on the River Kent at lunchtime, with a length of fishing line with weights and hooks hanging from the corner of its bill.  It was a beastly sight, a beautiful bird in some distress, snagged with lost or discarded tackle.  Sue reported the bird to the RSPCA, and we can only hope they can trap her and remove her safely.  She is just one of 3000 swan victims of entanglement and worse with fishing line each year.  I am happier writing about it than showing it in this journal.
