Secret Scotland

Because of its strategic importance at the entrance to Oban Harbour, the whole area known as Ganavan Sands and Wee Ganavan played a part in WW2. Merchant ships gathered in the harbour under the protection of the Royal Navy before joining up with larger convoys to the USA and Russia. Sites in Ganavan included a Flying Boat Maintenance Unit, Royal Naval Signal Station and an Anti-submarine Indicator loop.

We pass the remains of some of the buildings on our headland walk. The largest on the higher ground was the anti-submarine Loop Control Hut, collectively known as the defence huts. Each had two or three rooms. I imagine they were pretty cold in winter. There is also a channel cut out of the rock nearby, and on the hillside above is the Signal Station, now converted to a private house with one of the best views around.

In the background, Mull and the isle of Lismore.

Later: forgot to say, travelling tomorrow so will catch up on comments from home in a day or two.
