Leaf Spotting

Lower leaves from the baby apple tree have an interestingly distinctive pattern. The question is, what are the spots? Is it a rust infestation? Is it significant that they are in direct line of the steam from the kettle and heat from the toaster?

Said baby apple tree is now 29inches tall in its pot and therefore far too vigorous to be planted in our small garden.
