I reckon the key to getting evocative photos of cats, dogs and kids is all about getting down to their level, their eye level. For one thing, this better separates your subject from the background, and even though the background ends up blurrier, it can sometimes provide more context about where you are.

I wouldn't say today's shot is a shining example of such, but compare it with this shot of the same Daisy from a different angle and I think you'll see what I mean. This is how we humans usually see cats as we tower over them, but it's not how they see the world. This shot, however, is probably a good balance between the two.
