Titchfield Abbey

This is about 5 or 6 miles from where I live and I had no idea it existed!

The original abbey was built in 1222 for the Premonstratensian order. I'm glad I'm typing that and not saying it!  Apparently they were not monks but canons (not sure what the difference is). The abbey was dissolved in 1537 by Henry VIII when it was turned into a Manor House which was abandoned in 1781. Part of the Manor was deliberately demolished to create a romantic ruin.

Some of the abbey and Manor House survive and  the photo shows the gate house of the Manor House.
